1930 Ruxton RoadsterThe Ruxton was one of the earliest front wheel drive cars manufactured in the United States. This was an engineering concept used by a few manufacturers in the 1930's and then almost disappeared until it became very popular in the 1980's. Cars built in the 1930's with front wheel drive could be designed with a lower than normal silhouette. This eliminated the need for running boards, and became one of Ruxton's advertised features.
The symbol on the hubcaps is a "griffin", a mythical beast with the head and wings of an eagle, and the body of a lion. The unusual looking headlights are called "Woodlights", named for the company that manufactured them in California. These lights were also optional on Cords and Packards produced in that era.
Approximately ninety, 1929 & 1930 Ruxtons were built in St. Louis. The Great Depression was a major factor in the demise of this unique vehicle. Records indicate that there is only seven Ruxton Roadsters in existence today.
This Ruxton is a part of a locally owned collection of antique classic automobiles. We display different vehicles from this private cllection throughout the year. Please enjoy a piece of automobile history.Page:
